The Core Coding Round

Alex Chen35 min readUpdated 68 real interview reports

The live coding round at BlackRock is a check that you can take an ordinary problem, name the structure under it, and write it cleanly while you talk. The round that tries to break you comes later, the language-fundamentals one. A handful of problems come up far more than the rest. This lesson works the four that recur most and that the assessment and design lessons don't already cover. Detect a loop in a chain of records. Find the most frequent elements. Group strings that are rearrangements of each other. Find the best conversion rate through a graph of exchange rates.

The BlackRock angle
Each of these four arrives wrapped in market data, and the wrapper is the only thing that makes them look like BlackRock. A chain of trade amendments is a linked list. A tally of the most-traded tickers is a frequency count. A pile of scrambled instrument codes is a Premium question. A board of currency exchange rates is a weighted graph. Peel the finance story off and every one is a problem you have solved before. So the first move on each is the same: say the plain structure out loud before you type. The interviewer wants to watch you reduce the prompt to something standard and then write it without fumbling the details, not spring a trick you have not seen.
