Behavioral Questions by Theme
Two things to settle before the questions, starting with which Citadel. The hedge fund and Citadel Securities are separate companies under Ken Griffin. Citadel LLC is the buy-side firm that invests institutional capital, and Citadel Securities is the sell-side market maker that trades its own capital across a quarter of US equities. They run near-identical fit philosophies from a near-identical culture page. So the behavioral advice here holds for both, and where it diverges the lesson says so. Neither is The Citadel military college in Charleston, whose "Honor, Duty, Respect" motto shows up in searches and is irrelevant here.
Second, Citadel does not run a tidy standalone "values round" for most engineering and quant roles. Fit is woven through every stage: the recruiter screen, the coding and probability screens, the Superday, and the final hiring-manager or leadership call. An interviewer will pivot to a behavioral probe right after a probability puzzle or a live order-book coding problem. Your working memory is still loaded with the technical answer. By the time an offer exists, four or five interviewers have hit the same fit themes from different angles and compared notes. Consistency across those angles is checked on purpose. Two places do make fit the primary focus: the recruiter screen (roughly 30 to 45 minutes on background, "why quant, why Citadel," and communication) and the final HM round (motivation, ownership, collaboration, long-term fit).
One more thing that shapes every answer below. Citadel publishes no numbered "core values" list. What it publishes is culture prose. It rests on a few repeated lines you can quote back in your own words. "We win on the merits, with integrity." "Innovation happens when the best idea wins." "Driven by evidence, not ego." The behavioral signal clusters into three qualities the firm's own language keeps circling: ownership, resilience, and intellectual honesty. The five question themes on this page each read against one or more of those.
