Concurrency and Multithreading

Alex Chen35 min readUpdated 106 real interview reports

Databricks runs a concurrency round as its own slot in the loop, and engineers who have been through it report it as the hardest hour of the day. The prompts wander off the well-trodden path: a thread-safe logger draining a queue, a bounded buffer feeding several consumers, a rate limiter that several threads hammer at once. It runs in CoderPad, so your code executes against cases you build. The grade is a working component plus a lock story you can defend, weighed by how cleanly you reason about the race before you reach for a lock. Recalling a template does almost nothing here. There is shared state, many threads touch it, and one missed critical section quietly breaks the correctness bar.

So the prep looks nothing like the algorithm rounds. The work is finding where two threads collide over the same memory. Draw the smallest region only one thread enters at a time, then pick the simplest synchronization that keeps the component correct. No known shape to chase here. The fundamentals below give you the words for it, and the three components after them recur often. Each is built so its core logic runs on a single thread, with the threading reasoned through in prose. Get the logic right first. Then make it safe.

The Databricks angle
Candidates single this round out as the hardest hour of the Databricks loop, and it gets its own slot, kept apart from the algorithm questions. Expect a build-a-component prompt that touches shared state from many threads: a queue processor, a thread-safe cache, a metered limiter. The interviewer grades a working component plus the depth of your synchronization reasoning, so narrate where the race is and why your lock covers it before you type a line. A clean single-threaded core you then make safe reads far stronger than locks sprinkled in from the first keystroke.
