Behavioral Questions by Theme

Alex Chen13 min readUpdated 327 real interview reports

The overview lesson laid out the mission, the Seven Principles of Working at Discord, and the split between a Values round with leaders and an Attitude round with two people from outside engineering. This lesson spends its time on the questions themselves. It covers the themes that recur, the real wordings behind them, and a story bank that answers the whole loop without repeating a project. The wordings here are candidate-reported, drawn largely verbatim from people who sat the loop, so you can prepare to them directly rather than treating them as loose paraphrases. The one thing to hold loosely is the round mechanics, the specific Values-versus-Attitude split, which candidates describe less consistently; the questions themselves recur reliably.

One frame to keep as you read. Discord grades what you shipped, with concrete ownership and a real outcome, over polished culture-fit phrasing. So each theme below is paired with the behavioral signal it is really probing, not just a list of questions. Decide in advance which story leads with which principle. Then, when a session pivots from ownership to cross-functional collaboration, you reach for a fresh experience instead of bending the same one twice.

The Discord angle
One theme decides the Values round, and pure-algorithm shops rarely test it. Do you believe in the mission, and can you talk about Discord's product and business like someone who has thought about them? Discord leaders probe "Why Discord" as real conviction. They ask what you understand about the vision and how the company makes money, then invite you to interview them back. A generic "I love the app, it is huge, and the rumored IPO is exciting" answer fails on two counts. It names the brand back at the brand, and it leans on equity that is currently illiquid pre-IPO stock you cannot sell. The version that lands ties your reason to belonging, to a specific community you are part of, and to a working grasp of how the real-time platform and its subscriptions fit together. Everything else on this page is table stakes. This is the part worth over-preparing.
