The AI Coding Round

Late in 2025, DoorDash said publicly that it was rebuilding its engineering interviews around AI, and one reported session is the sharp end of that. You sit at your own machine, in your own editor, with a real AI coding agent switched on. Then you build a feature. Not a chat window bolted onto a coding pad. A genuine agent in a genuine project: Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Codex, whichever you live in. Engineers already feel the premise at their desks. The job now means working alongside a model that writes code, so the interview puts that model in front of you and watches how you run it.

It cuts against the rest of the loop in one sharp way. AI is welcome in this one session and banned in every other round, where only plain editor autocomplete is allowed. Code Craft, the Debugging round, the algorithm screens, all of them are AI-off. Coding is not what it checks. The other rounds already did that with the tool taken away. This session tests the separate skill of steering an agent through a build-run-debug loop without losing the thread, which is the thing DoorDash decided it now needs to hire for.

Be honest with yourself about how settled this is. DoorDash has said publicly where it is headed, and candidates who have drawn the session describe it consistently. Still, it is new, and it rolls out unevenly from team to team. Older prep flatly assumed AI was off limits in the room; that stance flipped inside a year. So treat what follows as a heads-up, not a guaranteed stop on your loop. You might draw this session. Nobody can promise you will. Preparing costs you nothing you would not want anyway, since the skills it rewards are the ones you already use shipping marketplace code with an agent open.
