Negotiating Your Offer

Alex Chen11 min readUpdated 72 real interview reports

Reaching an offer at Dropbox means you cleared the CodeSignal build gate and the onsite, and the conversation now turns to money. The Dropbox version of that conversation runs on a different logic than the FAANG-adjacent scripts most people bring in. The usual reflex is to push base, model a target bonus, and treat a signing bonus as the easy give. At Dropbox each of those instincts points at the wrong lever. Equity has the most room. Base sits in a narrower band. And the sign-on bonus is on its way out, not a chip you can spend.

One fact from candidate reports anchors everything else: Dropbox pushed to remove signing bonuses starting in 2022, so many packages now ship without one. That single change flips the standard advice. When a recruiter moves to match a competing offer, they typically do it by raising RSUs and base, valued over the four-year grant, instead of reaching for a sign-on. Before you build a counter around a signing check, ask the recruiter plainly whether one is even available for your offer. Assume it is not until they tell you otherwise.
