Behavioral Questions by Theme

A quick frame before the list. Instacart does not publish a clean rubric for how it runs the behavioral round. A lot of the prep floating around is just the generic software-engineer bank you would find for any company. So read the wordings below as representative, not as a script the interviewer reads off. The themes hold up across the accounts that exist even where the exact phrasing does not. And they fall straight out of the mission, the working set of values, and a genuine "Why Instacart."

The overview lesson covers the format: a dedicated round, roughly 45 minutes, run by the hiring manager, plus a cross-team "Bar Raiser" behavioral read that carries real weight in the debrief. It also lays out Instacart's mission and the five values the company surfaces across its careers materials. This lesson assumes that and spends its time on the questions themselves. One thing worth repeating here, because it changes how you pick stories. The round is used first and foremost for leveling. Multiple accounts describe it as calibration rather than a knockout, which means the scope and ownership in your stories are literally what set your band. Lead with your highest-scope, most-owned work, not your cleanest anecdote.

The Instacart angle
This round mostly decides your level, not whether you pass, so treat scope as the thing being measured. Reports converge on the behavioral session being calibration-first. The hiring manager is sizing how much you have actually owned, scoped, shipped, and maintained, then mapping that to a level band. The loop filters elsewhere, on system design for senior candidates and on the two coding rounds. What that means for you is concrete. Do not bring the tidy story with the best logo on it; bring the messy one where you carried something end to end and can defend every decision three follow-ups deep. A "we shipped it" answer with your own part left vague gets you banded lower even when the project was big. Ownership is a first-class performance category inside Instacart's engineering org, and this round is where they first take its measure.
