Negotiating Your Splunk Offer
Read a Splunk offer today and first settle whose stock is in it. Splunk was public on NASDAQ as SPLK until Cisco closed its roughly $28 billion acquisition in early 2024. SPLK stopped trading, so the equity line in a current letter is one of two things: Cisco RSUs (Cisco trades on NASDAQ as CSCO), or a multi-year cash award that Splunk labels long-term cash. Which one you get is the most misread part of the package.
Most of the reference points candidates reach for are stale. Comp sites still carry Splunk figures, some struck before the close, with a stock column that looks like tradable SPLK. It isn't anymore, and several offers from the past two years, India ones especially, show RSUs at zero with a long-term cash award added instead. That fits equity converting to Cisco instruments after the deal. This lesson walks the pay shape rung by rung across Splunk's two hiring markets. Then it takes apart the post-Cisco equity line and names the levers that move: the base, the sign-on, the award, and the level that sets the award.
