Spotify Case Study Interview: Production Debugging
The Spotify case study interview is one round in the onsite that hands you a system that is broken or degrading and asks you to fix it the way you would on call. There is a scenario, usually a real-world production failure, and you are the engineer who got paged. From there it is a conversation. You ask what you would ask a dashboard or a teammate, and the interviewer answers with the metric, the log line, the deploy timeline, or the snippet of code you asked to see. Very little of the hour is spent typing. Almost all of it is spent thinking out loud, deciding what to look at next, and saying why.
Spotify runs this round because it grades the thing a pure algorithm problem cannot reach: how you behave when a system is failing, the cause is unknown, and listeners are affected right now. Streaming audio to hundreds of millions of people means incidents are a fact of the job, not an edge case. So the round asks a fair question. When something you did not write breaks in a way you did not expect, can you stay calm, narrow it down, stop the bleeding, and keep the people around you in the loop? That is the same instinct the values round reads for, applied under pressure.
