Negotiating Your Offer

Alex Chen10 min readUpdated 309 real interview reports

Read the shape first. A Wayfair offer at the levels where most engineers join is built on base salary, with equity that is small to nonexistent until you climb into the senior bands. That is the reverse of the stock-loaded offers you get from a FAANG company, and it changes what is worth negotiating. When there is barely any equity to move, the whole conversation lives in the cash. So read the base first. Do not wait for a big stock grant that is not coming until later on the ladder.

The Wayfair angle
Most of tech pays you heavily in stock. Wayfair pays you mostly in cash at the levels where you are likely to start. On the crowdsourced medians below, an L3 offer might read as roughly $192K base against only about $22K of stock. Equity only becomes a real slice of the package at L4, where it can run near $160K. Below L3 the stock is thin enough that the honest way to read the offer is as base plus whatever one-time sign-on you can win. India is a sharper case. Offers there are frequently structured as all-fixed cash with no equity component at all, which pushes the entire negotiation onto base. Wherever you sit, the rule holds. At junior levels you are negotiating cash, because that is what the offer is made of.
