Negotiating Your Waymo Offer
When a Waymo offer lands, the headline total will look a lot like a Google offer, and that resemblance is the trap. In dollars, Waymo pays at Alphabet parity, roughly even with core Google at the senior rungs and a step ahead at entry and at the median. But the equity line is not the same instrument. Google pays real, publicly tradable Alphabet shares that you can sell the morning they vest. Waymo pays in WMUs, Waymo Monetary Units, its own private equity tied to Waymo's own valuation, with no public market to sell into. Two offers can print the same number and be worth genuinely different amounts, and the difference lives entirely in that equity line.
So reading a Waymo offer is mostly pricing its equity honestly. Negotiating one is knowing which lines a private-equity company leaves open. This lesson does both. It walks the compensation shape rung by rung and takes apart what a WMU is. It shows how a WMU differs from a Google RSU on liquidity, valuation, and tax timing. Then it names the levers that move: the base, the sign-on, the WMU grant, and the level that sets the grant. None of this is a reason to be down on the offer. Waymo is the clear leader in a field with real momentum, and the equity is a real stake in that. Value the offer for what it is, and not for how its headline number looks next to a public-stock package.
