Behavioral Questions by Theme

Wells Fargo advertises a "behavioral-based interview," and it means it. Across the technical round, the managerial round, and the HR conversation, most of the time goes to "Tell me about a time" prompts. The same handful of themes keep coming back. The six groups below sort those questions by what each one checks for, so you can prepare the signal under the wording. This is the Engineering behavioral loop, distinct from the teller and investment-banking tracks that share the Wells Fargo name.

The Wells Fargo angle
A bank reads your stories through a values lens, and Wells Fargo weighs integrity harder than a typical tech company. After the firm rebuilt its culture around doing the right thing, it replaced the old "Vision & Values" booklet with a framework called the Expectations. It opens with the line "Contribute to Wells Fargo’s transformation by doing what’s right, doing it well, and leading with an enterprise mindset." There is no published scorecard and the firm does not officially name STAR, so nobody grades your story against a numbered rubric. The extra weight goes on the ethics read. Bring a "made a mistake" story where you owned it cleanly, and a "your work accuracy fell short" story where you caught the error and put a control behind it. At a bank, a lapse near customer data or customer money is a headline, so those answers land with more force than they would elsewhere.

"Do what’s right" is the load-bearing Expectation, so build the integrity story first. A handful of experiences cover the whole round. You want a project you owned end to end, an accuracy slip or mistake you caught and controlled, and a candor moment where you gave or took direct feedback. Add a tight-deadline delivery and a genuine "why Wells Fargo" answer. Each one flexes to several questions below. Anchor every story in a real system, open with the decision that was yours, and close on the result you can name.
