Negotiating Your xAI Offer
When an xAI offer lands, read the equity before you read the total. The company, the frontier-AI lab behind Grok now merged with X, is private, and it pays in a different instrument than the public firms you are probably weighing it against. At the L4-equivalent the package is a strong cash base near $240K, no cash bonus, and an equity grant that carries most of a reported median total around $640K. That grant is stock options in a private company, where a big-tech letter would hand you tradable RSUs, so you cannot sell the shares on any open market. They carry a strike price you pay to exercise, are marked against a private 409A valuation, and turn into money only when a secondary sale or liquidity event lets you cash out. So the letter is a solid base, no bonus, and a private options bet, and the whole negotiation follows from that split.
That shape tells you where a negotiation can move, and there is no cash bonus to fight over. Base is real, spendable money with bounded room inside a band. The option grant is the largest and least certain place the value sits, and the biggest structural lever on it is level, since level sets the band for base and the grant. A sign-on can bridge a year-one gap, and the illiquid options give you a reason to push on how the package splits between cash and equity. One caveat matters more here than at most employers: the company is new, founded in 2023, and publishes neither comp nor a leveling matrix. What follows reasons from where the value sits rather than what recruiters concede, and the numbers drift as the private valuation moves.
