Intervals & Sorting

Alex Chen24 min readUpdated 330 real interview reports

Interval problems recur strongly in this loop. A Premium question scheduling is one of the most-asked problems at Bloomberg and interval merging sits close behind it. Both are approachable, and both have a trap that catches people who learned them as a recipe.

The trap is that they look like the same problem and are not. One asks what the combined ranges are. The other asks how many things overlap at the busiest moment. Sorting helps in both cases and the second step is completely different.
