Negotiating Your Offer

Alex Chen11 min readUpdated 330 real interview reports

Almost everything written about negotiating a technology offer assumes stock. Ask for more RSUs, model the vesting cliff, argue about the grant price, weigh a refresher against a signing bonus. None of that applies here, and reading generic advice will waste the one conversation you get.

Bloomberg is private and does not grant engineers equity. No RSUs, no options, no vesting schedule, no annual refresher. Your package is base salary, a performance bonus expressed as a target percentage of that base, and usually a signing bonus in the first year. That is the whole instrument.

This is not automatically worse. A four-year grant is a bet on a share price you cannot influence, and plenty of engineers have watched a headline number halve. In exchange you get cash. All of it legible, all of it payable regardless of what any market does. It is also, for the same reason, a narrower negotiation with fewer places to hide value.
