Negotiating a Hudson River Trading Offer

Alex Chen10 min readUpdated 44 real interview reports

When a Hudson River Trading offer lands, read its shape before the headline number. A private trading firm pays in a different currency than the tech companies you might weigh it against. The Core software engineer package is a high base plus a large discretionary cash bonus. That bonus is a share of the firm's trading profits and runs roughly the size of the base itself. A sign-on stub sits on top for year one. There is no stock grant, four-year vest, or refresh cycle to model. HRT is privately held, and the recurring vesting text on aggregator sites is template boilerplate with no real HRT equity plan behind it. What lands in the letter is base plus cash, and the eye-catching total is that base carrying a bonus almost as large beside it.

That structure tells you where a negotiation can go, and it is not where a FAANG negotiation goes. With no equity to argue over, the movable surface is narrow: a sign-on bonus, the base within whatever band the role sits in, and, for an experienced hire, the level you come in at. The large annual bonus looks like a lever but cannot be locked as a figure. It is discretionary and settled against firm and desk performance after you join. One more thing before you counter. This lesson is about the Core software engineer track, and HRT's Algo Developer roles sit on a higher pay scale. Pointing a Core negotiation at an Algo number benchmarks against the wrong ladder.
