Negotiation Playbook

Alex Chen10 min readUpdated

A Jump Trading offer does not read like a big-tech one, and most of the instincts you carry in from a Google or Amazon negotiation point the wrong way here. Jump is a private, employee-owned proprietary trading firm. It has no outside shareholders and no public stock, so there is no options grant to value at today's price and no four-year RSU refresher to model. The package is a strong base salary plus a large discretionary cash bonus, and for a new joiner usually a one-time sign-on on top. Almost everything that makes the number large lives in that discretionary bonus, which is exactly the part you cannot pin to a figure at signing.

Two cautions before any numbers. Jump is famously secretive, even by prop-firm standards, and it publishes no level ladder and no compensation bands. The figures below are drawn from public aggregators and candidate reports, so treat every one as directional rather than quoted, and expect it to drift as new offers land. And the only document that settles what you hold is your own offer letter. Read it line by line, and get every verbal assurance written into it as a number. A discretionary bonus is discretionary by design, and the gap between "bonuses here are large" and a figure in the letter is the gap between a hope and a term.
