Trees & Graphs

A Roblox experience is a graph before it is anything else. An avatar, the player's customizable character, is a bundle of parts and accessories that have to load in an order their dependencies allow. A game world is a grid of tiles, some buildable and some empty, that clump into regions. A friends list is a web of who is connected to whom. So when a coding round reaches for trees and graphs, the story on top is usually one of these, and the structure underneath is one you already know. Roblox does not publish the questions it asks, so read the frequencies here as directional rather than exact. This family lands somewhere near a seventh of the coding loop, and the game-flavored ones almost all live in it.

Three walks carry nearly everything in this lesson. Depth-first search dives down one path until it dead-ends, then backs up, which is how you flood a connected region or explore a tree. Breadth-first search fans out one ring at a time from a starting point, which is how you process a graph tier by tier. Topological sort orders a set of items so that every prerequisite comes before the thing that needs it, which is the avatar-load problem. The live round runs in a shared editor over video with your code executing as you go, in whatever language you are quickest in. Roblox's own engine is C++ and its scripting is Luau, but the coding round takes Python, Java, Go, JavaScript, Ruby, or C++ all the same.

The Roblox angle
The algorithm is almost always one you recognize inside a sentence, so your first move is to strip the game skin off the prompt and name the structure underneath. Avatar parts and their prerequisites are nodes and directed edges. A tile map is a grid graph where neighbors share an edge. A cluster of friends who all played the same experience is a connected component.
