Design the Multi-Instance Platform

Sometimes asked

Start with the boundary around one customer, because on this platform that boundary is the architecture. Ask what a "customer" physically is here and two answers are on the table. It could be a slice of a shared database, thousands of companies packed into one schema and told apart by an id column. Or it could be a wall: its own application server, its own database, its own copy of everything, sharing nothing with the customer next door. That single choice decides the shape of every other problem in the design. It sets how you add a column, how a bad query hurts your neighbors, how you fail over, and how you patch the fleet. Pick the shared slice and you optimize for density. Pick the wall and you optimize for isolation. ServiceNow picked the wall, and the platform is the consequences of that.

The ServiceNow angle
Reach for a dedicated instance per customer over a tenant_id column; ServiceNow is the enterprise platform that chose isolation over density. Its closest sibling, Salesforce, runs the textbook shared-schema model: thousands of customer orgs live in one database, kept apart by a tenant discriminator and policed by a metadata kernel with hard governor limits. ServiceNow inverted that: every customer gets a dedicated application instance and a dedicated MariaDB database, a model its own docs call multi-instance and logically single-tenant. That inversion is the genuinely distinctive thing about the Now Platform, and it is exactly the architecture no sibling guide can run. The interview reward is real: a candidate who explains why single-tenant instances beat shared-schema for this buyer, and what that choice costs, has shown platform judgment rather than a memorized diagram. Treat the isolation model as the load-bearing decision and everything downstream (the metadata tables, the failover, the fleet upgrade) as what that decision forces.
