Behavioral Questions by Theme

Alex Chen15 min readUpdated 78 real interview reports

Morgan Stanley treats behavioral as a genuine gate, and two things about this round are unusual. The interviewer will sometimes ask you to name the firm's core values outright, and the HR conversation asks what you actually know about Morgan Stanley as a business, down to its stock. Most of the seat is spent on "Tell me about a time" prompts across the hiring-manager round and the HR round, and the same themes recur. The groups below sort those questions by the value each one is quietly checking, so you can prepare the signal underneath the wording. This is the Technology division loop, distinct from the investment-banking and quant tracks that share the Morgan Stanley name.

The Morgan Stanley angle
Morgan Stanley reads your stories through five named values, and it expects you to know them. The firm states that everything it does is guided by five core values: Do the Right Thing, Put Clients First, Lead with Exceptional Ideas, Commit to Diversity and Inclusion, and Give Back. There is no Amazon-style scorecard behind them. Nobody grades your answer against a numbered rubric, and reciting all five in one breath sounds rehearsed. The round checks whether a strong story lands on the right value by itself. Do the Right Thing carries the most weight, because this is a regulated bank. A "made a mistake" story where you owned it cleanly lands harder here than at a typical tech company. So does a moment where you held the line when the fast path was the wrong one.

A handful of stories cover the whole round, so build them once and flex them. You need an integrity story where you owned a mistake and left a safeguard behind. Add a project you owned end to end and tied to a real user, and a technology or design choice you can defend against the alternatives. Then a moment of working through differences on a team, someone you invested in, and a genuine "Why Morgan Stanley" answer. Each flexes to several questions below.
