The Online Assessment

Alex Chen14 min readUpdated 78 real interview reports

The online assessment is where most Morgan Stanley software-engineering applications end. It ends there before a recruiter reads your resume closely or an engineer joins a call. The bar is a bank's bar. Algorithm difficulty tops out around medium. The filtering comes from speed, from a debugging section that few other firms open with, and from a block of knowledge questions on Core Java, operating systems, and databases. You answer all of it before you ever reach a human. Learn the exact shape of the test you will sit and drill the two or three surfaces it grades. That clears the gate that stops most people cold.

Morgan Stanley does not run one assessment. It runs two, and which one you sit turns on your track. Campus and new-grad candidates, the Technology Analyst and Summer Analyst pipelines, sit a proctored aptitude-platform test that begins by asking you to fix bugs in code. Experienced and lateral hires, along with much of the India campus funnel, sit a HackerRank test that pairs a pair of coding problems with a heavy multiple-choice knowledge block and a SQL query. Preparing hard for the wrong one is the most expensive mistake available here, so pin down your regime before you spend an hour drilling.
