The Core Coding Round

Alex Chen32 min readUpdated 78 real interview reports

The Morgan Stanley coding round keeps a bank's bar. Most of what it asks is easy to medium, stated in standard form with no trading story wrapped around it, and clearable with time to spare. House Robber and the cache-design ask carry that reputation, and the earlier lessons drill them. What this lesson adds are the four other problems that recur near the top of the frequency list and are not covered anywhere else in the guide. Two of them, two Premium questions, are the ones that reach into the Hard tier, so they reward being seen before the room, not during it.

The Morgan Stanley angle
You are expected to clear the coding round, so bank these four fast and save time for the rounds that decide the offer. Morgan Stanley does its real filtering in Core Java, concurrency, and the JVM, which live in the technical rounds after this one. Picture a candidate who writes a Premium question in one clean pass, then narrates why the minimum-so-far is all the state the problem needs. That candidate has spent the round exactly right. The four below are the ones most likely to appear that you have not already prepared elsewhere. Each is worked so the standard shape is automatic and the corner cases are named before you are asked.
