The Zscaler Online Assessment

Alex Chen35 min readUpdated 118 real interview reports

The online assessment is the gate the rest of the loop depends on, and it's the hardest thing in it. A HackerRank sitting of ninety minutes to two hours, three or four problems, scored partially by test case. The difficulty reaches past interview-medium into competitive-programming range. Whole campus cohorts have come out of it with zero selections. Strong engineers fail it because they prepared for the wrong test. They drill the medium set live rounds use, then meet segment trees, dynamic programming on trees, combinatorics under a modulus, and bitmask counting. This lesson explains the format that trips people. Then it works three problems from the families the assessment draws on, each runnable and correct, so you can study the shape instead of memorizing a trick.

The Zscaler angle
Recent assessments split into two sections, and the second is a Python trap. For engineering and intern roles, the sitting often arrives in two parts. The first section takes a backend language of your choice: C, C++ or Java. The second is restricted to Python. It's mandatory, and it's graded for real. People who cleared the backend half have been turned down on the Python half alone. Several said they just weren't fluent enough in Python to finish under the clock. If Python is your weaker language, drill its idioms before the assessment: input parsing, dictionaries, heaps and the standard library. Get fast enough that the second section doesn't eat your time.
